Jaimie Fanatic: Tech-Funk Mix (August 09)

Seeing that Jaimie Fanatic called his new promo mix tech-funk and regarding the quality of his work, we thought it was a good occasion to have a feature and a little interview here.

Q: Who are you ?

A: My name is Jaimie Fanatic, living in Amsterdam and signed to Mad Decent. Releasing on Mad Decent, Dim Mak and Southern Fried records.

Q: What is this mix ?

A: This is my first mix to show that there is more to me than just hard loud noise music. Which is still the main focus of my music and what I like most. But I like this too, a lot! This mix is actually pretty mellow and funky but still has that Jaimie Fanatic twist to it.. I just hope you guys like it!!

Q: What’s floating your boat these days ?

A: Just did 3 remixes for Dim Mak: The Willowz, Diplo vs Laidback Luke and Malente vs Azzido Da Bass.. I'm setting up a tour in USA right now and will be touring Australia soon too. Also working on my album which is half finished. I'm actually gonna sing on it myself.. bare with me!! Oh and not to forget. I just handed in my remixes for Flo-Rida & Nelly Furtado, Jet and The Gossip!!

Q: What can we expect from you in the near future ?

A: Now that I've moved to Amsterdam I am more focussed on my career. So with that in mind I am expecting some musical growth. Hence the new mix, a broader perspective of who i am and what I do. You will hear this all in new remixes.

1) Mike Doc - Lost Tribes

Interview: Rennie Pilgrem

TFM recently had the opportunity to catch up with one of the more influential members of the old school Breakbeat scene - pioneer of the Nu School sound, label owner, producer/artist, etcetera - Rennie Pilgrem. To try to encapsulate the extent of Rennie’s impact would be exhausting, so I’ll refrain. Here are a few words from him regarding the past, present and future. Enjoy.

Where do you draw your inspiration from these days - what keeps drawing you back to creating music in the dance arena?

These days I have found myself drawing on the sort of music I grew up with, which is Funk. Nowadays for me to be inspired, I need to try different things...stay away from sticking to formulas...I am working at different tempos for example and merging real instruments more with electronic stuff.

Dance music and popularity are fickle currents, are there any factors to which you can attribute your sustained tenure as a top producer and label owner?

I suppose you could say that I have stuck broadly to what I am into which is more syncopated rhythms....a lot of so-called producers aren’t proper artists and therefore ‘they have nothing to say’ which means they are more likely to follow trends rather than forge their own path.

With such an extensive catalog of releases, is it even possible for individual tracks to standout or remain as favourites to you? And if so, which tracks have stayed in the crate or in the proverbial top 5 for you?

Some tracks after the initial playing-out lose their attraction but some become old favourites. For me it’s ‘Hold You’ by Dopamine, ‘Purple Funky Monkey’ by JDS, ‘2 Freaks’ by myself, Blim and Chickaboo, ‘Cous Cous’ by myself and Uberzone and ‘Celebrity’ (PaisleyPark Mix) by myself and Chickaboo.

Being regarded as a pioneer and integral part of the breakbeat scene must come with its own weight and pitfalls. Have you ever felt constrained by that, personally or creatively?

I haven’t felt constrained by being known for loving Breaks but I feel held back sometimes by feeling like I should always be making tracks for djs to play in clubs, ‘cos it can be too ‘samey’.

Have you experienced any unique challenges when translating your sound to a live incarnation?

It’s a huge challenge because you have to marry electronic trickery with real musicians....trying to get the balance between performance and being faithful to the original is not easy...but I have been lucky to have had some great people alongside me.

Can you help the uninitiated visualize the live experience by giving us a brief description?

Real drums, real bass and guitar, live keyboards and anything that can’t be played live, running on Abelton Live with real-time effects and edits as required.

Coming from the beginnings of the breaks movement, and having helped shape its trajectory, I have to ask, what do you see for the future of breakbeat? Or in dance music in general?

My personal future lies with going back to the roots of the music which is with Funk but reinterpreting it in a modern way. I also hope that breaks gets way more experimental and less bland. Dance music in general seems to be getting more integrated with itself with styles merging...which is no bad thing.

What tunes or genres outside of breaks are currently striking your fancy?

Funk is what is tickling my fancy...I like some dub step but a lot of it sounds like a parody of itself already.

It's 16 years and counting for TCR, what's on the horizon for the label?

Remixing some of our back catalogue and releasing new stuff mainly of mine...assuming I can find a way of making it worthwhile......people taking the music for free is making it almost impossible unfortunately. I don’t blame them but something will have to change or the quantity of music will go up but the quality will go down.

Upcoming releases, noteworthy gigs, future plans for Rennie specifically?

We are just about to re-release our Rhythm Section material...starting off with ‘Coming On Strong’ and we have our first gig as Ryhthm Section for 18 years (Raindance 20th Birthday, London Sept 19th). I have a couple of remixes I am doing. I am recording with a great Aussie singer Arianne Shreiber and working on a very excititng post-modern funk project with another well-known producer. I am also writing music for TV. I am doing a couple of small tours in the USA and Canada in the Autumn and touring Australia and New Zealand with Chickaboo at the end of the year.

Any parting words for the Tech Funk Manifesto?

If you are making ‘tech-funk’ please make sure that it lives up to its name.

Bonjour!

I would like to introduce myself as a new contributor to this blog.
My name is Benjamin Vial, and I claim to be one of the few ambassadeurs of tech-funk in that country called France.
I will try to share things with you here, especially through the radio shows I've been hosting from nearly 2 years on Brap.FM, but also on other subjects, always tech funk related, of course!

Concerning the radio show, it is called Weekend Warmer and it usually hosts a guest mix by renowned DJ/producers, rising talents and fellow tech funkers. All previous shows can be heard and downloaded here, including mixes by the likes of Zoo Brazil, John Dahlbäck, Mowgli, Style Of Eye, Butter Party and more.
If you would like to have a mix of yours featured in a future show, just contact me.

Speak soon, and may the tech-funk be with you!

The Eclectic Selector (001)

The idea of starting a new monthly column on Beatportal that focuses on a wide selection of genre defying music, is one that Terry Church and myself had been knocking around for a while.

Like most people who run their own label, produce, blog, record and DJ, there’s precious little time at the end of the month for anything other than a sharp intake of breath, but I’ve always loved to write, and as the saying goes, ‘if you want something doing, ask a busy person.’

The main focus of the ‘Eclectic Selector’ pieces will not be to dwell on absolutes and the kind of purism that will always be the domain of others more ‘dedicated’ to their specialty than me, but to celebrate the open-mindedness of producers that live on the margins, and artists who walk the line.

Much of what I’ll be focusing on will still be bound together by a common BPM as represented by the tech-funk ethos (a loose amalgamation of house, breaks, electro and techno), but I’ll also concentrate on hybrid music that attempts to create dancefloors without boundaries.
(contd)

INTRODUCING THE BOXROOM....

Firstly, we'd like to thank Elite Force for allowing us the privilege of posting here on the Techfunk Manifesto, I look forward to pushing the blog and the sound that extra bit further. And secondly we, Stretch, Hightower and Zuul would like to introduce you to the BOXROOM radioshow.

We try our very best to push the Techfunk sound in all it's entirety. With no boundaries or pigeonholes anywhere, in very much the same vein as this blog, we try to bring you not only the djs that have the very same outlook, but the producers too, with some of the premier names in the game at the moment, including the likes of Dylan Rhymes, Vandal, Pablo Decoder, Rektchordz, Broombeck, Fine Cut Bodies, Benjamin Vial and many more. But don't think we just chase the big guns, it's very much an open perspective at the BOXROOM, we try to introduce some of the youngblood snapping at the very heels of the 'Elite' djs & producers and the nights out there who introduce their respective town's and cities.

Enough with the intro, on with the sounds, the last show we had none other than Australia's finest BUTTER PARTY taking over the Boxroom, so if you missed it get on the download and savour the sounds of the southern hemisphere's finest....

[UP & COMING] Little Jo - On the Mix

Pioneering good music regardless of genre Little Jo is one who doesn’t like to be pinned down. In 2007 she released her Debut EP, a warped 3 track release taking you from rock influenced guitars through to stomping breaks and minimal bleeps, getting 6/8 in M8 magazine.

Jo’s DJ sets feature much of the same, depending on the venue and crowd, and this diversity has landed her gigs at some of London’s best known clubs including Turnmills, NSB @ Herbal, Inigo, Babalou, the Whitehouse, Ministry, Very Very Wrong indeed and The Cross. From full on rocky-breaks to dirty electronica, her policy is simply good music that rocks a dancefloor. Her energy behind the decks in contagious, and no where is this more true then at her Beatcheck residency, where she has supported the likes of Krafty Cuts, Elite Force, the Rouge Element, Beardyman and Annie Nightingale…

Her own club nights Amplitude and Dirty Monkeys have also grown from strength to strength at their parties across London and Northampton, playing the best in dirty beats. Last year Jo completed a BA combined Hons in Music and Popular Culture, with a dissertation on how digital technology has transformed dance music and its culture. She has also contributed as a music journalist to a wide array of publications.

[UP & COMING] DJ Carol Campos (Brazil) : Futurerave Mix

It's always a boost to come across people on the other side of the globe who are supporting the same kind of sounds as we are, so it was a pleasure to come across a new face (to me anyway) Carol Campos out of Brazil. Since 2002, she's been spreading her beats and basslines throughout southern Brazil, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. With only 3 months of professional experience, she got the residence at the biggest rave in southern Brazil: Fulltronic, playing
an exclusive mix of nuschool breaks, electro, techfunk and tech house, that guaranteed her to be one of the most booked djs in south Brazil.

She also has her own blog supporting the scene at http://www.betabass.com.br - check it out & show her some love on her SOUNDCLOUD page where there are other mixes for you to grab if you like the sound of this :)

Back catalogue: Dave Clarke - World Service [React] 2001

Digging through a mate's back catalogue last weekend I found Dave Clarke's double disc 'World Service' from 2001 on React. It has two discs, the first of which is a techno mix and the second an electro mix.

Disc 2 didn't do that much for me, with notable exceptions being tracks 3, Anthony Rother - Redlight district, and 12, Radiohead - Idioteque. Both of these still sound super fresh. I had a phase around 2004 of throwing Idioteque into my club sets on the memory of this mix.

The real reason for bringing this eight year old mixtape to your attention is Disc 2 - the techno mix.

Dave mixes in my preferred style of long overlays, the effective use of pan and echo off the board and the ability to blur the lines between one track and the next. It smells of classic Detroit, with a modern English slant on proceedings. That, and it has enough bowel-loosening bass to snap you out of your morning stupor. It includes artists we know and love like Marco Bailey, Joey Beltram, Jeff Mills, Umek and James Ruskin. It's great to hear that quality lasts.

World Service puts the tech before the funk... Check it out.

Check out Devil's Advocate when you're in the mood for procrastination.

Danny Darko aka The Kootz - Candid Mix August 09

A nice funky techy housey mix I made the other night on the fly and it turned out quite well so I decided to share it with my fellow manifesto bloggers.

For those who don't know me you can call me Dan. I have been deejaying all sorts of genres for 7 years and producing for about 2 years. I'm mainly concentrating now on developing a techno and house style to my music and I aspire to be a successful DJ and producer one day.
